State Legalization of Marijuana: Impact on Transportation and Warehousing?

Editor’s Note: “Above the Fold” is a new segment on Talking Logistics where we spend a couple of minutes discussing a headline or two from last week’s supply chain and logistics news and raise a question for you to answer.

As reported last week by Material Handling and Logistics, the transportation and warehousing sector experienced the largest overall drug positivity increase of any sector between 2015-2017 (21.4%, based on data from the Quest Diagnostics Drug Testing Index), with marijuana being the most commonly detected substance (33.3% increase from 2015-2017).

Recreational use of marijuana is now legal in 10 states plus the District of Columbia, and in 2018, 21 states considered bills that would legalize adult-use marijuana. However, marijuana is still a Schedule I illegal substance under federal law.

How is (will) the legalization of marijuana use impact hiring practices in transportation and logistics?
