“I Forget What That Feels Like”: Why I Ride for a T1D Cure

This October 4th will mark 14 years since my daughter Hannah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 11. I interviewed her several weeks ago for a podcast I recently launched called “Living the Breakthrough: T1D Stories.” At the end of the episode, I asked Hannah, “What would a world without T1D mean to you?” Watch this short video clip for what she said.

Hannah is the reason why I get on my bicycle every year and cycle hundreds of miles and climb countless hills to raise money for Breakthrough T1D, the leading non-profit organization dedicated to research and advocacy for type 1 diabetes, aiming to improve the lives of those with T1D and ultimately find a cure.

This will be the 10th riding season for our Logistics Leaders for T1D Cure cycling team. Every year I raise the bar on my riding and fundraising goals. This year I will be doing three challenging rides, beginning with one that is already keeping me up at night: cycling to the summit of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire on August 16th. It’s 7.6 miles up a switchback road, 4,678 feet of climbing, 12% average grade, with no flat portions to rest. It’s been called “the toughest hill climb in the US, if not the world.” I honestly don’t know if I can do it, but I will give it a try.

I will also cycle 100 miles at the Breakthrough T1D Cape Cod Ride in September and another 100 miles (and 9,700 feet of climbing!) at the Ride Santa Barbara 100 event in October.

My goal is to raise $17,500 for Breakthrough T1D this year, which is perhaps my biggest challenge of all. I’m just 38% of the way there.

How can you help?

Back to Hannah: “A world without type 1 diabetes would mean a world where I can get up and just walk out the door without anything but the clothes on my back [no need to carry insulin, pump supplies, test strips, glucose tablets, etc.] I forget what that feels like. I would love to feel that again.”

I would love for her to feel that freedom again too, and with your help, Hannah and everyone living with T1D will wake up to a world without T1D sooner than we imagine.

Thank you in advance for your support!

With gratitude,

Adrian
