It’s my birthday today.
My 53rd year on this rotating planet was an interesting one, to put it mildly. I spent most of the first half not feeling well and most of the second half working to get healthy again.
I began my birthday early this morning with a visit to my endocrinologist. We talked, she did an ultrasound of my neck, I had some blood work done. “Everything looks good,” she told me.
My 54th year is off to a good start.
When you have your thyroid and 26 lymph nodes taken out, it’s physically impossible to be 100% again. But I’m as close as can be, and marking another year of life in this world is more meaningful to me this time around than ever before.
On my desk there is a drawing I made this past February, as I started on my path to physical and mental recovery. It was inspired by Juansen Dizon’s words: “Every sunrise, a new chapter in your life, waiting to be written.”
I’m off to write today’s chapter.

Part of today’s chapter will be spending time with my wife and kids, who fill me with so much love and happiness. And I’ll be getting ice cream too. A daily dose of ice cream might not be good for the body, but it’s certainly great for the soul!
So, I’ll share my commentary the week after next, after I return from vacation.
Have a meaningful weekend!
