It’s the Friday of Labor Day weekend here in the US, which means many folks are likely taking today off to make it an even longer weekend.
I’m heading to NYC as you read this, back to Brooklyn, back to the neighborhood where I was born and grew up in.
My aunt and uncle still live there, in the same basement apartment I used to hang out in with my cousins as a kid (I only lived a few blocks away).
This is a trip I should have taken many years ago, when there was no reason to visit my aunt and uncle other than to say “Hello, it’s been a while.” But life, you know, gets busy and there is never time. At least, you know, that is what I tell myself.
I’m bringing a heart-shaped dish filled with hard fruit candies for my aunt.
She just had her third round of chemo for a cancer that has spread. My dad only had two rounds of chemo when he was battling lung cancer many years ago, and after all the pain and nausea he experienced, he said, “No mas,” I’m done.
I’m hoping the candies will provide some sweetness for my aunt on those difficult days.
Life, you know, there is never enough time.
